A Stitch in Time Saves Nine - The Importance of Preventive Healthcare

In today’s fast-paced environment, most of us tend to lead a hectic lifestyle, juggling between professional, social, and personal activities. Hence it is crucial to take a step back and cast a gaze on our health, which often takes a backseat amongst the many other ongoing priorities. Many of us tend to pay attention to health issues as they become apparent; however, this approach consumes more time and effort with a potential for further health deterioration. Why not also look at your health as an asset, to be protected and preserved to continue a good quality of life?

At Unilabs, we firmly believe that health is a journey, and prevention is the compass guiding us towards a healthier tomorrow.

Ahead of World Health Day, we spoke to Unilabs co-Chief medical Officer, Dr Rahul Chaudhary, to delve into the significance of preventive healthcare. Dr Chaudhary sheds light on the importance of routine checks and screening tests in detecting potential health issues before they escalate.

Could you elaborate on why preventive healthcare is crucial today?

Absolutely. Preventive healthcare helps us pave the way for a healthier future saving individuals from the burden of chronic illnesses down the line. By prioritising routine checks and screenings, we empower individuals to take charge of their health proactively.

What are some key aspects of preventive healthcare that individuals should focus on?

One can start by assessing lifestyle habits. Evaluating one's habits and making necessary adjustments can significantly reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, incorporating regular physical exams, BMI assessments, blood pressure screenings, eye exams, dental check-ups, skin examinations, heart rate monitoring, and staying up to date with immunizations are pivotal in preventive healthcare.

Could you walk us through some common screening tests that individuals should consider?

Certainly. Various laboratory and imaging tests that play a crucial role in early detection. These include cholesterol measurements, diabetes screenings, complete blood counts, liver function tests, renal function tests, and screenings for sexually transmitted diseases.

Tests for screening cancers, such as Pap smears/HPV tests, mammography, prostate-specific antigen tests, and faecal occult blood tests, are instrumental in detecting cancer at its nascent stages, facilitating early detection and timely intervention by healthcare professionals. As the adage goes, “A stitch in time saves nine,” emphasizing the importance of being proactive in preserving our health and well-being.

How can individuals ensure they stay on top of their preventive healthcare regimen?

Regular check-ups with healthcare professionals are paramount. It's essential to consult with your healthcare provider to tailor a preventive healthcare plan that aligns with your age, sex, and health status. By fostering open communication and staying proactive, we can stay ahead of potential health concerns and prioritise our overall well-being.
