Unilabs opens dedicated Covid-19 lab in Porto, to deliver 15,000 PCR tests a day

Geneva, 25 November 2020: Unilabs, the leading European diagnostic provider, has opened a new Covid-19 lab in Porto, allowing Unilabs Portugal to ramp up the number of daily tests from 6,000 to 15,000.

“Diagnosis is in our DNA, and we know speed is key to stopping the spread of this virus,” said Luis Menezes, Unilabs’ Regional Director for Portugal, LATAM and the Middle East. “We built this facility in less than three weeks, and we have heavily invested in new technology to assist our health authorities in fighting the pandemic.”

The facility will mainly test samples from Portugal, but can also supply demand from other countries in the Unilabs network. To date, Unilabs has processed more than three million PCR tests and more than a million antibody tests across its 17 countries. More recently, it has also introduced rapid antigen testing to the testing menu.

“As a diagnostic company, our mission has never been more important,” said Menezes. “We are confident this new facility help us meet testing needs in Portugal and indeed across Europe. It will allow us contribute to the health of our societies – something that gives an incredible pride and joy to all of us working at Unilabs.”
